A Call for Moderation in Development by Dawn Lorring

On August 7, 2015, the Cleveland Planning Commission will meet in City Hall, Room 514, at 9:00 AM to consider Knez Builder’s proposal. I urge my fellow residents to attend this meeting and have their voices heard.

As Cleveland’s revitalization gains momentum, wonderful things are happening. More residents live in downtown and new retail shops and world class restaurants abound. Long past are the days when Cleveland was known simply as the mistake on the lake.

One of the reasons that my husband and I love Cleveland is that every neighborhood is unique. Who can’t fall in love with the artsy vibes of Waterloo and the Detroit-shore way and the bustling night life in Ohio City? That neighborhood feel is exactly why we chose to move to the distinct pocket of Tremont known as Duck Island. We have a beautiful mix of neighbors who are committed to our “little neck of the woods.” With mainly older homes, with nice yards, Duck Island is a neighborhood where everyone looks out for each other, says hello and asks how you are doing. In the busy world of today, that is difficult to find. Continue reading

The new, second location for Crust – in Midtown Cleveland – is up and running.  Now, the familiar sights and smells that have beckoned Tremonsters half way down Kenilworth from either W. 10th or W. 11th Streets to the small but mighty Crust Tremont location are having the same impact on new customers from the intersection of St. Clair Avenue and E. 30th Street. Tremonsters Can’t Get Enough of Their Civilization Coffee

Civilization Selling Out_1
A special report by The Tremonster

Tremonsters love their Civilization coffee…but according to Civilization owner/operator Nancy Holcepl, “The past few weeks have been crazy!”

While scooping, measuring, brewing, and serving an endless stream of devoted customers, she explained, “We normally restock on Saturdays, but this past Friday we almost sold out.  We restocked on Saturday but I had to restock again on Tuesday.  It’s now Thursday, and look,” Holcepl gestured to the quickly depleting coffee bean levels in her fish bowl-style glass drums and mason jars behind the counter.  Next to the jars was a bag of Civilization coffee beans with a receipt attached.  She said, “People have been calling in their orders ahead of time.” Continue reading

CRUST Set to Re-Open with a New Oven

DSCN1225

A special report by The Tremonster

Crust Tremont has been closed for the past two days as it installed a brand-new, custom-made pizza oven.  Mike Griffin, CRUST owner/operator, was most impressed with the American company that supplied the new oven for CRUST, Marsal & Sons, Inc., located in Lindenhurst, New York.

Griffin said, “When you order it they start building it from scratch in New York — it comes from Limehurst, New York.  They built this from scratch, and they’ve got stone slabs lining the oven bottom.  This is what we’ve got going at our new downtown location [opening soon — keep an eye on The Tremonster for updates].”

As for why CRUST needed a new pizza oven, Griffin said, “We couldn’t keep up with our pizza orders with that little oven…it was crazy — especially on the weekends — it was too much.”
