Reflections on Tremont Wildlife by Yvonne Bruce

It’s hard to think of Tremont as a habitat for nature, but there’s more wildlife here than in any other city I’ve lived. Raccoons, possums, skunks, groundhogs, cormorants circling Steelyard and blue herons stalking fish in the canal with Alcoa’s stacks behind them. Last July I was walking home from the Scranton towpath ribbon cutting when I heard clip clopping behind me on the most desolate stretch of Carter Rd. Continue reading

After only one month outdoors, the Merrick House Learning Garden plants have grown tremendously.

By Stacia Naoum

After months of planning and preparation, the Merrick House Learning Garden kicked off its inaugural season in 2015. Seeds were planted indoors in March, and by May they were ready to transplant into their new home in five raised beds installed in the backyard at 1050 Starkweather Avenue.

The backyard at Merrick House before the garden was planned and planted. In order to best utilize this space, Merrick House decided to turn it into an outdoor classroom.

The garden was conceptualized not only to utilize the large grassy area in the back of the Merrick House facility, but also to create learning opportunities for program participants of the non-‐profit, as well as a way to get the larger community involved at Merrick House.  Continue reading

Santiago $10 per Puerto Rican Dinner Fundraiser

A special report by The Tremonster

Jim Santiago held a $10 Puerto Rican dinner fundraiser after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 7.  His daughter is going to Europe, so this entrepreneurial Tremonster rolled up his sleeves and threw a Puerto Rican cookout party for his neighbors in the W 14th Street & Bhurer Avenue area in support of the trip.

Santiago charged $10 per person for a share of two large outdoor grills worth of his “West Side Barbeque,” which attracted many customers with an irresistible aroma that filled the streets of Tremont’s lower east side after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

If you missed it, don’t worry — Santiago has another $10/Puerto Rican dinner fundraiser planned for after 2:00 p.m. on June 14, in his yard at 1328 Buhrer Avenue. Continue reading

Marcia Moreno, Associate Director of Esperanza, Inc., is a woman on a mission.

On the first two Saturdays of May, she, her energetic staff, and 40 prominent volunteers in the Cleveland community rolled up their sleeves and rigorously processed and interviewed two floors worth of 2015 Esperanza college scholarship applicants.  This was in preparation for Esperanza’s annual “Fiesta of Hope” event, where the scholarship recipients are celebrated.

Right now, Esperanza is working around the clock to collect an additional $40,000 to award all of the qualifying college scholarship applications before the June 19th “Fiesta of Hope” event. Continue reading
