How the Lincoln Park Tile Mural was Made
by Meg Hadzinsky
A new, public mural adorns the formerly blank, cement wall along the south side of Tremont’s Lincoln Park Gazebo. The public mural project is the work of Angelica Pozo, a resident of Tremont as well as the founder of Tremont Artist In Residence program, also known as Tremont AIR. We caught up with Pozo during the final public tile decorating session, held at the iconic Literary Café, to find out how she involved and reflected so much of the Tremont community in this piece of public history, now on display. Cleveland’s Historic Mounted Police Unit
A special report by The Tremonster
Recently, The Tremonster asked Cleveland Police Captain Keith Sulzer why Tremonsters might be noticing more officers on foot – or even on horseback – interacting with residents in and around our neighborhood. His answer was simple: “Cleveland Police understand the importance of community policing in our mission to make Cleveland a safer place to live, work, and raise our children.” Sulzer emphasized the mission is felt force-wide: “Every officer in the division knows that connecting with the community is our number one goal.” Horseback patrols, like the recent Lincoln Park patrol of Cleveland Police Officers George Janusczak and Breeze (pictured), have actually been on the rise since 2012. New Lincoln-West School to Have Space at MetroHealth
CMSD NEWS BUREAU
CMSD’s new Lincoln-West School of Science and Health will be based partly at the MetroHealth System’s main campus.
District and hospital leaders believe the school, which will open July 25 with ninth- and 10th-graders, may be the only one in the country located within a hospital.
Tenth-graders will attend classes at MetroHealth three days a week, while ninth-graders visit weekly. The students will interact with professionals and observe the medical, business and other careers available in the healthcare industry. The juniors and seniors who come later will take coursework at Lincoln-West and online and serve internships.
“The Lincoln-West School of Science and Health will expose students to the hundreds of jobs available in healthcare, jobs that will guarantee them a sound and safe future,” Dr. Akram Boutros, MetroHealth’s president and chief executive officer, said at annual stakeholders meeting Thursday at the Global Center for Health Innovation. He listed the school among accomplishments and plans that address the health and well-being of Cuyahoga County residents. Continue reading
Makers and Wizard of Oddz in Tremont
Video footage by Jasmine Conkle
by Elisabeth Weems
On Friday, April 8th, the Tremont neighborhood held its monthly ArtWalk (now Walkabout Tremont) to showcase and celebrate local art and artists. Residents and visitors enjoyed pop-up shops, delicious dining and the grand opening of two unique boutiques in one building: Jennifer Marks’ Makers, and Megan Baechle’s The Wizard of Oddz. The Tremonster had the chance to interview both entrepreneurs during the grand opening of their sister shops.
Jennifer Marks, owner of Makers
Tremonster: How does your partnership with the Wizard of Oddz aid in the development of both of these boutiques – and what does it mean to have each other’s support?
Marks: I was in Bad Girl Ventures* and met a lot of really amazing women. As women entrepreneurs, we have an uphill battle: our access to funds, our access to patrons…we really struggle. We’re here to support each other, and what I found out was these amazing, amazing women have these great business ideas, but they’re being steered toward three-year leases – very expensive leases – triple net terms, and things like that. We were very fortunate to be able to offer a space for another female entrepreneur who is starting her venture, which was Megan and Wizard of Oddz. We’re here. We’re invested in the community. We want to work with the community – we do fundraisers and we donate to the local charities – that’s what is important to me. At the end of the day, I need to feel good about what I’m doing. First Cameras Installed in Tremont’s Resident Camera Network
A special report by The Tremonster
BEWARE TREMONT CRIMINALS:
The first home security cameras are being installed by the resident-based Security Cameras for Tremont program. Tremont has been surveyed, and residents have volunteered to have their homes hardwired for the neighborhood-wide security camera network.
The program has designed a camera network leaving few blind spots for criminals to operate in Tremont without leaving a trail of high-quality information for Cleveland Police.
A grassroots effort to deter future crime began on August 28th when Paul Duda, a Tremont home and business owner who has lived in Tremont for 15 years, launched a GOFUNDME.com campaign for “Security Cameras for Tremont.” Continue reading
