Roosevelt Post 58 has a new home in the American Legion (Post 627, 3935 E. 42nd St.), Newburgh Heights.
The longtime Tremont institution, the Polish Legion of American Veterans Roosevelt Post 58, sold its Tremont building and closed its doors in December of 2022.
“Ever since we sold that building two years ago, we’ve been looking for a place we could call ‘home.’ We finally found it,” said Terry Zacharyj, Post 58 Commander.
On Saturday, Post 58 held its second meeting at the E. 42nd St. American Legion. Turnout was strong, packing their host’s bar area with familiar, regular attendees of the former Tremont location, including Brett Holycross, who arrived with two trays of fried Lake Erie Yellow Perch, which was welcomed warmly.
“It’s identical to what Post 58 was: we have the horseshoe bar; wall-to-wall people; a beautiful hall upstairs; slot machines!”
But it’s not just the nearby location near Harvard and E. 42nd St, the bar, or meeting hall space that makes this location an ideal new home for Post 58–it’s the mission of the current occupant offering to share the space, American Legion Post 627.
“This American Legion (Post 627) does so much for veterans, and the neighborhood, and the community that we fit right in.”
There are many ways the Posts are joining forces. Terry said, “Our people transferred over. Our Ladies Auxiliary has joined their Auxiliary. We’re open seven days a week, starting at 1:00 pm. We recommend you stop by and take a look at the place.”
“It’s definitely got a good cause, good people, and a hell of a nice gang.”
