Michael Cannavino & Greater Cleveland Volunteers
by Dianna Kall
“I chose to start volunteering because I have been blessed with a great family and health throughout my entire life and that is not the same for all people,” said Michael Cannavino, a west-side Clevelander, as he began explaining why he has added volunteering to his already packed schedule.
Cannavino, a full-time dispatcher with Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department, has completed his bachelor’s degree in communications from Cleveland State University and is currently enrolled at Kent State University, pursuing a master’s degree in Public Administration.
“As my educational career changed I realized how important a solid education is, but more so, my comfort in the classroom. That’s when I realized I wanted to tutor or mentor children and give them positive educational experiences,” Cannavino elaborated.
He credits his involvement to his wife. She supported his decision and is enthused when listening to his experiences.
Cannavino started to research volunteer opportunities in Cleveland. He turned to the internet and discovered Greater Cleveland Volunteers. He knew of the agency from a friend, started following them on social media, and then learned about The My Mentor My Friend program.
He contacted the agency and scheduled an interview. Continue reading

Security Cameras for Tremont
A special report by The Tremonster
On April 18th, two men were mugged on W. 11th Street. Since then, Tremonsters have seen a rash of carjackings and robberies that have kept friends and customers from visiting our neighborhood and have made some longtime residents consider a move. Cleveland Police have stepped up their efforts, and our city council representatives and Tremont West Development Corporation have convened well-attended meetings to address community concerns.
These efforts have paid off, with the apprehension of criminals who have been targeting Tremont and the re-dedication of our tight-knit community to keeping our neighborhood safe. Continue reading

What Goes Down Must Come Up
“Why learning to mountain bike in the Cleveland Metroparks has gotten me nowhere!”
by Joshua C York
Today I found myself atop what was oddly a very tall hill in an otherwise pretty flat part of Oklahoma. I was in Tulsa, and I rode the Turkey Mountain trail network up and down and back and forth and somehow gained 800 feet to be straddling my bike and gazing down a straight chute of rock and scree and wondering just how I was supposed to ride back down the sketchiest stretch of downhill I have ever attempted. Continue reading
