After only one month outdoors, the Merrick House Learning Garden plants have grown tremendously.

By Stacia Naoum

After months of planning and preparation, the Merrick House Learning Garden kicked off its inaugural season in 2015. Seeds were planted indoors in March, and by May they were ready to transplant into their new home in five raised beds installed in the backyard at 1050 Starkweather Avenue.

The backyard at Merrick House before the garden was planned and planted. In order to best utilize this space, Merrick House decided to turn it into an outdoor classroom.

The garden was conceptualized not only to utilize the large grassy area in the back of the Merrick House facility, but also to create learning opportunities for program participants of the non-‐profit, as well as a way to get the larger community involved at Merrick House.  Continue reading

On the first two Saturdays of May, she, her energetic staff, and 40 prominent volunteers in the Cleveland community rolled up their sleeves and rigorously processed and interviewed two floors worth of 2015 Esperanza college scholarship applicants.  This was in preparation for Esperanza’s annual “Fiesta of Hope” event, where the scholarship recipients are celebrated.

Right now, Esperanza is working around the clock to collect an additional $40,000 to award all of the qualifying college scholarship applications before the June 19th “Fiesta of Hope” event. Continue reading

Tremonsters Can’t Get Enough of Their Civilization Coffee

Civilization Selling Out_1
A special report by The Tremonster

Tremonsters love their Civilization coffee…but according to Civilization owner/operator Nancy Holcepl, “The past few weeks have been crazy!”

While scooping, measuring, brewing, and serving an endless stream of devoted customers, she explained, “We normally restock on Saturdays, but this past Friday we almost sold out.  We restocked on Saturday but I had to restock again on Tuesday.  It’s now Thursday, and look,” Holcepl gestured to the quickly depleting coffee bean levels in her fish bowl-style glass drums and mason jars behind the counter.  Next to the jars was a bag of Civilization coffee beans with a receipt attached.  She said, “People have been calling in their orders ahead of time.” Continue reading

A special report by The Tremonster

Crust Tremont has been closed for the past two days as it installed a brand-new, custom-made pizza oven.  Mike Griffin, CRUST owner/operator, was most impressed with the American company that supplied the new oven for CRUST, Marsal & Sons, Inc., located in Lindenhurst, New York.

Griffin said, “When you order it they start building it from scratch in New York — it comes from Limehurst, New York.  They built this from scratch, and they’ve got stone slabs lining the oven bottom.  This is what we’ve got going at our new downtown location [opening soon — keep an eye on The Tremonster for updates].”

As for why CRUST needed a new pizza oven, Griffin said, “We couldn’t keep up with our pizza orders with that little oven…it was crazy — especially on the weekends — it was too much.”
